Why is Qualcomm holding the AllJoyn Peer-2-Peer App Challenge?
Qualcomm is striving to enable a world where all devices can easily interact with one another, allowing developers and device manufacturers to create new classes of applications and user experiences. The challenge aims to engage software developers in new and lasting relationships with Qualcomm to build the AllJoyn ecosystem. By learning about AllJoyn, developers can help users share experiences like never before.
Why do I have to upload a video?
The Popular Choice Award is determined by public voting. Some viewers may not have access to multiple Android devices. A video helps ensure that all users can view and experience your application.
The video will also be helpful to the panel of judges. Judges are not required to download and test your application until the final round of judging, so your video should clearly and concisely show the functionality and purpose of your application. You may create a screencast or use a handheld video camera to make your video, or choose any other method that captures the application’s value and user interface. Your video is not required to have audio, but narration may help viewers understand and appreciate your application.
What are the criteria for judging the submissions?
Software applications will be tested for eligibility upon submission (assuring that they meet all requirements of the Official Rules and function as depicted in the video and text description submitted). Once deemed eligible, submission videos will be judged based on the following criteria to determine the finalists: quality of the submission (includes creativity and originality), the Implementation of the application (includes how well the idea – described in the “Description” area of the submission – was executed by the developer and how well AllJoyn technology was integrated), and the overall user experience (includes design, graphics, typography, and visual aesthetic). Finalist applications will be judged using the same criteria.
These criteria will determine the winners of the Best Overall App awards and Category awards. Please see Official Rules for more information.
The Best Multi-screen Experience Award will be based off of the above criteria with the addition of an assessment of the quality of the multi-screen experience (includes shared experience between television and tablet, television and smartphone, desktop PC and tablet, or desktop PC and smartphone devices whereby the application(s) across the devices work together to create an experience that is reliant on both screens).
Please note that judges are not required to manually test your application until the final round of judging and may judge based on the submitted video, images, and text description until that phase.
Popular Choice awards will be determined by public voting. For full details, review the Official Rules.
Do I retain intellectual property ownership?
Yes. By submitting an application to the AllJoyn Peer-2-Peer App Challenge, you do not transfer any intellectual property rights to the sponsor of the competition (Qualcomm) or the competition administrator (ChallengePost). However, the administrator will have the right to publicly display your submission on the website at http://alljoynappchallenge.com (the “Website”). The competition administrator will also be allowed to publicize your name on the Website in connection with the submission and the challenge during the competition and for 12 months after its conclusion. Additionally, Qualcomm will have the right to use and publicly display the app for advertising and publicity purposes worldwide and in any media whatsoever. These publicity rights are further described in the Official Rules.
Can more than one person work on an application and receive credit for it? And if the application wins a prize, how will the prize money be split among the creators?
Yes, teams are encouraged. If a team of individuals, a corporation or an organization is selected as a prize winner, the administrator will send the full prize to the submitter. It will be up to the winning team or organization to reallocate the prize money between the team members, as they deem it appropriate.
Can my application win more than one prize?
Yes. Each application must be entered into a specific category (game, social, or educational) and cannot win a prize in other categories to which it was not entered. However, all category winners are eligible to win the Best App, Best Multi-screen Experience, and Popular Choice awards.
Similarly, Best App award winners are also eligible to win Best Multi-screen Experience or Popular Choice awards.
Can I enter more than one application?
Yes. There is no limit to how many times an eligible person, team or organization may enter. An individual may also participate on behalf of more than one team, corporation, or nonprofit organization. However, if you submit two or more applications that are identical or substantially similar, Qualcomm and the competition administrator reserve the right to disqualify all the submissions or require you to choose one submission to enter into the competition.
Who is eligible to enter the competition and from what countries?
The AllJoyn Peer-2-Peer App Challenge is open to legal residents who have reached the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry and corporations or organizations domiciled in the fifty (50) United States (including the District of Columbia), Japan, China, India, South Korea, Germany, the U.K. and Israel.
Do the submitted apps have to be newly created for this competition, or can they be pre-existing applications?
A submission must either be a new application or, if the application is not new, have incorporated AllJoyn only after the start of the competition Submission Period. AllJoyn applications published to a publicly accessible Android application store prior to the start of the submission period will not be eligible for the Challenge. All submissions must comply with all of the requirements outlined in the Official Rules.
We are an organization. Can we enter?
Organizations with fewer than 50 employees may enter and compete for the cash prizes if they are legally established entities (profit, nonprofit, academic) domiciled in the United States, Japan, China, India, South Korea, Germany, the U.K. or Israel. Organizations with 50 or more employees may enter and compete for the Large Organization Recognition Award, which has no cash prize. Large Organizations must also be domiciled in the United States, Japan, China, India, South Korea, Germany, the U.K. or Israel.
What do I need to use to build my application? Where can I find it?
You need to build an application that is based on an Android mobile device and clearly integrates the AllJoyn SDK.
What will Qualcomm and ChallengePost do with my submission?
The AllJoyn Peer-2-Peer App Challenge Sponsors and Administrator will have the right to display and promote your name and submission to the public on the http://alljoynappchallenge.com website. Qualcomm will also be allowed to publicize your name in connection with the submission and the challenge, as well as after the challenge, in connection with other advertising and publicity relating to Qualcomm product offerings.
If I charge for my application, is it still eligible for AllJoyn Peer-2-Peer App Challenge?
You can offer a paid version of your application, but the version that you submit to the challenge must be free of charge until the judging period has ended. Features that are exclusive to the paid version will not be considered by the judges. If your application includes some features that are unlocked with payment, those features should not be part of your submission. If your submission video or description includes the paid features, your submission may be disqualified.
Can my application include advertisements?
The challenge rules do not prohibit advertising in applications. Please note, however, that if the content of the ads is deemed inappropriate, your submission may be disqualified.
What defines a “Multi-screen” experience?
A multi-screen experience refers to a shared experience between television and tablet, television and smartphone, desktop PC and tablet, or desktop PC and smartphone devices whereby the application(s) across the devices work together to create an experience that is reliant on both screens.
Does my application need to have store approval prior to the submission deadline?
No, but your application should be submitted to the relevant application store for review by the submission deadline. If your application has not yet been approved you must provide a link to downloadable version of the application or an .apk file in your submission.
How can I provide ChallengePost with access to test my application if it hasn’t been approved yet by the relevant application store?
If your Android application has not yet been approved for distribution by the application store, send us a link to download the .apk file at Support@ChallengePost.com and add a link to download the .apk file to the “Web URL” field in your submission.
What are the key competition dates?
The submission deadline is December 27, 2012, at 5 p.m. EST. Judging and public voting will begin on January 16, 2013 at 10 a.m. EST, and will end January 29, 2013 at 5 p.m. EST. Winners will be announced on or around February 26, 2013.
How do I enter?
1. Create an account on http://alljoynappchallenge.com/users/register or log in with an existing ChallengePost account.
2. On AllJoynAppChallenge.com, click Accept this challenge to register your interest in participating. This step ensures that you will receive important challenge updates.
3. Create a working software application for Android that integrates the AllJoyn SDK. Click here to download the SDK.
4. Submit your application to a publicly accessible Android application store for commercial distribution. (If your application has been submitted but is not yet approved for distribution by an Android application store you must include an .apk file in your submission.) Please note that your submitted application must be free of charge until the judging period has ended. For more information see the Official Rules.
5. Prepare a video demonstrating how your application works on an Android mobile device or an emulator. Your video is a critical element of your submission. It will be used for public voting, and an internal review board may evaluate your video submission using the criteria described above to select applications for final judging. This means that the judges are only required to use your application if it is selected for final judging. So it is important that your video clearly and concisely show the functionality and purpose of your application. You may create a screencast or use a handheld video camera to make your video, or choose any other method that captures the application’s value and user interface. Your video is not required to have audio, but narration will help the judges understand and appreciate your application
6. Write a text description of the idea behind your application (which is executed in the video and application itself), and take at least one photograph of the user interface to supplement your video. Please see the Judging Criteria and Official Rules for further details.
7. Confirm that you have read and agree to the Official Rules, complete all required submission form fields, and submit the demonstration video, text description, photograph(s) and a link to your application on a live, publicly accessible Android application store (or, if you have submitted your application to an Android application store, but they have not approved it for distribution, provide an .apk file for the application or a link to where an .apk file can be downloaded at no charge). The link should be added to the “Web URL” field in the submission form.
